About the turn of the century, perhaps no one was better known in Waihi than Tommy Cutts who came here from Thames. He occupied a shack in the West End, but was an inveterate wanderer who seemed to have "no visible means of support", though probably he received a Remittance from abroad as it was obvious that he had a background of education and gallant good manners. "I hope I do not intrude", was one of his well-known expressions.
