Before he became President of the United States of America (1929-33), Herbert (Edgar) C Hoover was a mine engineer and was once a director of the Talisman Consolidated Coy. While stationed in Melbourne he inspected the company’s mine at Karangahake. [not Edgar, see correction in Journal 42: Updates on Previous Articles - E]
In March 1995, Mr Todd Miller, a relative of Mr John Cotter who resides at Karangahake, was visiting the Hoover Presidential Library in Iowa when he spotted a letter written in September 1905 from Mr H Stansfield to Mr Hoover. Mr Miller obtained a copy of the letter and forwarded it to Mr Cotter.
